An accused drunk driver is behind bars after allegedly hitting and killing a pedestrian in a late-night crash on Long Island.
The wreck happened in Copiague, near the intersection of Great Neck Road and Malta Street, at around 11:20 p.m. Wednesday, March 5.
Mario Matute, 59, was walking on Great Neck Road when he was struck by a Hyundai SUV heading southbound, Suffolk County Police said. Matute, of Copiague, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Long Island daycare worker is accused of forcing a toddler’s face into a cot so hard the child needed stitches, Suffolk County police announced.
Megan Marchena, 26, of Massapequa, allegedly shoved the 18-month-old girl’s face down at Tutor Time of Lindenhurst on Monday, Feb. 24, authorities said.
The child was taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip, where she received stitches for her injuries, police said.

An accused cop impersonator was busted shoplifting from a Long Island Target store, police said.
Nassau County Police responded to the New Hyde Park Target store on Union Turnpike for an attempted shoplifting at around 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21, the agency said.
Employees told police that Yunzhi Xie, 43, had attempted to exit the store with unpaid merchandise. When a loss prevention employee confronted Xie, he claimed to be a police officer and presented a shield despite not being a law enforcement officer, according to police.

9/11 Memorial, Restaurants Hit By Graffiti Vandals In Massapequa; Man, Juvenile Arrested
A 20-year-old man and a juvenile were both charged in a string of vandalism at a Long Island beach.
Officers were called to Tobay Beach in Massapequa for graffiti damage that was done to several areas at around 3:45 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22.
An investigation found that Tayyab Muhammad, 20, of South Farmingdale and a juvenile accomplice defaced the 9/11 Memorial Wall, a concession stand, and men and women’s bathrooms, Nassau County Police said.
Their graffiti spree, which also damaged the Boatyard and Surf Shack restaurants, caused an estimated $3,500 in damage, according to police.
